Question

the tendency to exhibit -3 oxidation state decreases down the group of 15th group elements. this is because of the increase in the atomic size and metallic character . BUT METALLIC CHARACTER MEANS ELECTROPOSITIVITY . THEN WHY DOES THE TENDENCY TO EXHIBIT -3 OXIDATION STATE DECREASES??

Solution

If a substance has high metallic character, then it has the tendency to lose electron due to which it will form positive charge ion.
So in 15 group, if the metallic character is increasing down the group, then it means tendency to gain electron decreases down the group. Thus, tendency to exhibit -3 oxidation state decreases as we go down. Bismuth hardly show any compound in-3 oxidation state.
