Solution

United Nations was established with the purpose of maintaining international peace and security and to resolve conflict among nation states. Even though UN has succeeded to a certain extent in resolving inter state and intra state conflict by sending its peace keeping missions, it has also ensured social and economic cooperation through its various agencies like UNESCO,UNICEF but today its role as a global association is being seriously challenged because:

1. Even though all the members of UN General Assembly has one vote it is the UN Security Council which takes crucial decisions related to war and peace.

2. It is the 5 Permanent members of the Security council who take all the crucial decisions. Their veto power gives them exclusive privilege over other members.

3. It is argued that decisions of the UN are influenced by the national interest of USA which is the largest contributor of money to the UN.

4. Likewise voting powers in the IMF and World Bank are determined by the contribution of money made by its member states, which again is dominated by US and other countries like France, Saudi Arabia. Thus, it lacks equitable representation, where other countries have little say in the decisions of IMF or World Bank.

5. Iraq crisis has undermined the position of UN and challenged its credibility in maintaining peace and security as US went ahead with its Operation "Iraqi Freedom", even though the decision was vetoed by some members of the UN Security Council.
