Solution

The valency of atoms in covalent compounds is determined by the number of bonds formed by the atoms. In CO molecule carbon forms 3 bonds but contributes only 2 electrons towards bond formation whereas oxygen contributes 4 electrons towards bond formation. One of the three bonds is a coordinate bond where only oxygen atom contributes its two electrons.Thererfore, the valency of carbon is 2 and oxygen is 4 in CO.
