Question

think about whether insulin can be orally administrated to diabetic people or not? Why?

Open in App
Solution

Oral insulin is a protein. When it is administered orally then it goes down to the stomach where hydrochloric acid and various peptidases are present which break down proteins in food into small amino acids. Hence, insulin would be broken down in stomach by the action of these enzymes, before it reaches the target organ, that is, liver. Thus, insulin is not administered orally.
