The three pillars of the French Society were the nobles, clergy, and commoners.

  • The nobility and clergy were the privileged classes that were exempted from taxes while most of the peasants and artisans had to bear the burden of taxation.
  • There was increase in food prices due to bad harvest. However, the wages of labourers were not increased and they had to face hardship. Consequently, the gap between the rich and the poor increased causing resentment among the working class.
