Question

To an evacuated vessel with movable piston under external pressure of 1 atm, 0.1 mol of He and 1 mol of an unknown compound(vapour pressure=0.68 atm at 0 C) are introduced.Considering the ideal gas behaviour the total volume of the gases al 0C is

Solution

Given,
External pressure, Pext = 1 atm
Vapour pressure of compound, Pv = 0.68 atm (At this vapour pressure, the compound is in liquid state).
Pressure of He gas, PHe = Pext- Pv
= 1-0.68 = 0.32 atm
Moles of He = 0.1
Temperature = 0 degree Celcius = 273 K
Using ideal gas equation:
PV = nRT
0.32 x V = 0.1 x 0.08206 x 273
V = 7 L
