This is because turmeric contains a compound known as cucumine. This on reacting with the fatty acid (present in soap/detergent) changes its colour to red. To remove the stain from cloth, it should be treated either with liquid dish detergent as it is non-ionic. Also, it can be treated with vinegar to fade the stain.
