The two kinds of situation in which the First law of motion is generally applied are: rest and uniform motion.
A body at rest will remain at rest until an external force gives it a motion. This is inertia of rest.
A body in uniform motion (constant velocity) will continue its motion along a straight line with constant velocity until it is disturbed by an external force to change it motion. This is inertia of motion.
