The complex ions may or may not dissociate into its constituent ions in aqueous solution. The dissociation depends on the strength of bond formed between them. The extent of dissociation is very small and reversible in nature. If the metal-ligand bong is strong then dissociation will be minimum, complex ion will be more stable and if the metal-ligand bond is weak then extent of dissociation will be more and complex ion will be less stable. This extent of dissociation is measured by stability constant.
For complex ion [Ag(NH3)2]+ , the dissociation and stability constant is given as,
[Ag(NH3)2]+ ⇌ Ag+ + 2NH3
Stability constant, K = [Ag(NH3)2]+/ [Ag+].[NH3]2
