Then why does the north pole of a MAGNET attract to the north pole of the earth why not the south pole.

The magnets are made and labeled with their north pole but in reality the north pole on a magnet is short for North seeking pole or let us understand in another way that the end which seeks towards North get attracted towards North. Thus, it will if a magnetic compass needle is used then it will point towards North. So, the magnetic compass needles are labeled according to the direction that they will point or seek towards. Since the opposite poles attract therefore the North seeking end of a magnet will get attracted towards the magnetic south which is the North Pole of the earth.
