Question

Using Raoults law explain how the total vapour pressure over the solution is

related to mole fraction of components in the following solutions.(i) CHCl3 (l) and CH2Cl2(l) (ii) NaCl(s) and H2O (l)EXPLAIN IN DETAIL.

Solution

Part-1
For a binary solution having two components such as CHCl3 and CH2Cl2 having volatile nature. The total pressure for such binary system is given as
p = X1 p10+ X2 p20

p1 = partial pressure of CHCl3
p2 = partial pressure of CH2Cl2
p = Total vapor pressure

Part-II

For a binary system containing NaCl as non-volatile solute in a solution then the partial pressure term only considered for vaporisable component according to Raoults law. Hence the expression for total pressure or a binary system is reduced to

p = X1 p10

p1= partial pressure of H2O component.
