Upon Dr. Ambedkar's demand, the British had introduced separate electorates for Dalits. Mahatma Gandhi, however, strongly opposed this provision on the ground that it will divide Hindu society.
He began an indefinite hunger strike in Poona's Yerwada Jail from September 20, 1932. A compromise was reached between him and Dr. Ambedkar on September 24, 1932 that took the form of the Poona Pact.

Mahatma Gandhi could sense the division that will arise due to this demand for separate electorates.It may even lead to political conflict between the upper caste and the lower caste which is not healthy for Indian nationalistic spirit.
