Question

VVhy is a sound vvave of frequency in the range of human hearing range not used in SONAR?

Solution

The frequencies on which sonar is used vary widely. Sound propagation inside the water is affected by absorption in the water itself as well as at the surface and bottom. This absorption depends upon frequency of the Sonar waves being used, with several different mechanisms in sea water. As a consequence Long-range sonar uses low frequencies to minimize absorption effects. Infact there are many sonars that use frequencies in the 20 to 20,000 Hertz range. In general, the sonars that are used for short range underwater applications operate on a slightly higher frequency than those that are designed to look over long distances. But there are a lot of sonars which use frequencies far outside the range of human hearing.
