Question

Water is a compound ,so are steam and ice also compounds?

Open in App
Solution

Steam and ice are nothing but the gaseous and solid state of water respectively. Conversion of a solid into liquid or a liquid into gas is a physical change and we know that physical changes do not involve change in the chemical composition of the substance. Thus, a particular substance will have the same chemical composition in solid, liquid and gaseous state. Hence, the chemical composition of water is the same as that of steam and ice and so if water is a compound, then steam and ice are also compounds.
