Question

water is neutral . so why alcohol is WEAKER THAN water in acidic strength .?

Solution

Hi,

The acidic nature of water is due to the polar nature of O—H bond. Due to electron releasing effect of alkyl groups, the polarity of O—H bond decreases and hence the acidic nature. Water on the other hand is much stronger acid than alcohol as it shown by its reaction.

R—O- + H—O---H → R—O---H + -OH

This reaction shows that water is better proton donor than alcohol. Also alkoxide is a better proton acceptor than hydroxide ion which suggests that alkoxides are stronger bases.
