What are alkali metals ?

Are flourine and Chlorine alkali metals, if yes then why?

Alkali metals are elements belonging to 1st group of periodic table. Their valence shell has one electron in their outer most s- sub shell and hence they are also called s-block elements.

Chlorine and fluorine are not alkali metals. They are not metals. They fall in the 17th group of periodic table and need 1 electron to obtain noble gas configuration i.e. fully filled orbitals.
