When a metal is mixed with another element, which may be a metal or a non metal such that a new substance of homogeneous composition is obtained, the substance obtained is known as an alloy. An alloy is thus a homogeneous mixture of two or more metals, or a metal and a non metal.

Alloy Composition Uses

Stainless Steel Fe + Cr + C cutlery, automobile, machinery, tools etc.

Brass Cu + Zn shiny appearance, high malleability plumbing, electrical fittings and musical instruments

Aluminium is a metal and not an alloy.
