Monoatomic ions - Single positive or negative charge carrying atoms are known as monoatomic ions. Generally, elements with one valency form this type of ions. It may be of two types:

i. Monoatomic cations - Ions with a positive charge are called monoatomic cations in which electrons are lost from an atom, eg. Na+

ii. Monoatomic anions- Ions with a negative charge are called anions in which extra electrons are added to the atom.eg. Cl-
