Proteins are constituted by 20 amino acids. These amino acids are linked together by peptide bonds. The long chains thus formed by the linking together of amino acids, are known as polypeptide chains.
The process of protein synthesis is very systematic and it follow two main steps namely, transcription and translation.
Transcription- The process of synthesis of a m RNA molecule from the one of the strand of double helix DNA is known as transcription. DNA strand acts as a template for the synthesis of m RNA.
Transcription process takes place in the nucleus.
Translation- The synthesis of protein from m RNA is known as translation. Thus amino acid chains (polypeptide) are synthesised from m RNA in this process which takes place in the cytoplasm.
