Solution
Peripheral nervous system is the part of the nervous system consisting of nerves and the ganglia outside the brain and the spinal cord.
The major functions of peripheral nervous system are
It carries the messages to and from the central nervous system. It sends the information to the brains and carries the orders from the brain.
The peripheral nervous system is divided into 2 major parts; the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system
i) Somatic nervous system connects central nervous system to the voluntary muscles. It also sends sensory information to the central nervous system through peripheral nerve fibres to all the sense organs such as skin, eyes, nose, ears etc.
ii) Autonomic nervous system connects central nervous system to the internal organs muscles and glands.
Motor nerves - Motor nerves allow the brain to control our muscles. The brain sends signals over the motor nerves to tell our muscles to expand or contract so we can move.
Peripheral nervous system also controls heart rate, body temperature etc.
Peripheral nervous system is also responsible for the body’s fight or flight reaction.
