The advantage of corrosion is found in some metals as the metals, like aluminum, surface corrosion forms an oxide layer which is highly hard and does not disposed off by water or atmospheric oxygen and so it protects the metal from being consumed by further corrosion.

So, the same principle is used in "anodizing" steel to guard against rust.
