A carrier like water is always required to carry the sperms to the egg.
Survival rate is low because the eggs or fertilized egg may be eaten by predators or swept by water.
Sperms are required in large numbers to enable fertilization
In absence of proper maternal care , the development of fertilized egg is risky and susceptible to loss
