What are the main planks of India's food policy? What steps have been taken by the government to achieve food security?
1) India is aiming at self – sufficiency in food grains since Independence. After Independence, Indian policy makers adopted all measures to achieve self – sufficiency in food grains.
2) Hence, India adopted a new strategy in agriculture known as Green Revolution especially in the production of wheat and rice
3) To achieve food security, Government has designed a new food security system which has two components namely, buffer stock and Public Distribution System (PDS)
4) Buffer stock is the stock of food grains procured by the Government through Food Corporation of India (FCI). The food thus procured by FCI is distributed through PDS through government regulated ration shops in rural areas.
5) At present, there are several Poverty Alleviation Programmes (PAPs) mostly in rural areas while some programmes such as mid day meals scheme are exclusively food security programmes.
