Solution

Cathode Rays

  1. Travel in straight lines.
  2. It consists of matter particles and posses’ energy due to its mass and velocity.
  3. It is made up of negatively charged particles.
  4. As cathode rays particle posses’ kinetic energy, it heats the object on which they fall.
  5. It can penetrate through thin metallic sheets.
  6. It ionizes gas through which it pass
  7. It travel speed equivalent of that of light.

Anode Rays

  1. It is made up of positively charged particles.
  2. It travels in straight lines.
  3. It can penetrate thin metal foils.
  4. It produces ionization in gas.
  5. It is deflected by electrical and magnetic field.
  6. Nature of anode rays depends on the gas taken in discharge tube.

Characteristics of Alpha rays

  1. It can penetrate through skin.
  2. It travels very short distance through air.
  3. Most alphas will have same range in he given gas.
  4. It travels along straight tracks.
  5. Few get scatter near to source and few at the end of their path.

Characteristics of Beta rays

  1. It travels distance more than alpha particles and it is moderately penetrating.
  2. It is harmful if beta emitting particles gets deposited internally of human body.
  3. Beta rays are difficult to detect.

Characteristics of Gamma rays

  1. X-rays are like gamma rays.
  2. It travels long distance and penetrate deep in human tissue.
  3. These are externally and internally hazardous to humans.
  4. Instrument that can detect only alpha particles cannot detect gamma rays
  5. It is electromagnetic radiation like visible light, radio waves and ultraviolet light.
