Ethanol is highly combustible compound.

Combustion of ethanol results in the formation of carbon dioxide and water along with a large amount of heat, due to which it has a good calorific value.

Ethanol is also added to the petrol in cold places. Ethanol being an impurities decreases the freezing point of the petrol and hence prevent it from freezing. Moreover ethanol is an easily combustible substance therefore it does not affect the efficiency of petrol.
