The media, both print and electronic, plays an important role in a democracy.
1. The media is known as the fourth estate and also a watchdog of democracy.
2. It is a medium for the government agencies to spread awareness regarding policies and developmental schemes undertaken for the people.
3. The media is also a forum for people to air their grievances against the government.
4. The media can play a negative role by sensationalizing scandals and evoking and molding strong public opinion on issues. On the other the same can be a positive role by airing constructive criticism regarding the workings of the government.
5. The Right to Information Act, 2005 gives the people of the country to question and demand transparency in the affairs of the government on most matters except defence and strategic affairs.
