Salient features of the Indian Constitution include:
1. Secularism: India is a secular country. Although the word 'Secular' has been introduced by the 42nd Amendment Act in the Preamble to he Constitution of India, but India has been secular since its independence. There is no state religion. In matters of religion the state is neutral and non- interfering. All are free to follow and practise their own religion.
2. Single Citizenship: In India there exists only one citizenship. An Indian citizen is a citizen of India only and not of any Indian state as in case of America where dual citizenship exists.
3. Lengthiest Constitution: Indian Constitution is the lengthiest one comprising of 395 articles divided ino 22 parts and 9 schedules.
4. Federal in form and unitary in essence: It has provided a unique system of government which is neither fully federal or unitary. It has the essential requisites of the federation such as a written constitution, distribution of powers between he centre and the states and the Supreme Court. But it is unitary in the sense that the Central government exercises legislative, executive and financial control over the states.
5.Parliamentary form of Government: India has a Parliamentary form of government where the head of the state at is the President is a nominal one. The Cabinet exercises the real executive powers.
6.Judicial Review: Indian Constitution as the provision for Judicial Review which implies that the Supreme court has he power to declare a law passed by the legislature as null and void if it is inconsistent with the Fundamental Rights.
7. Fundamental Rights: The Constitution provides for fundamental rights to the citizens which are safeguarded by the Supreme Court and the High Courts.
