What change hydropower plants cause in the course of rivers?

By erecting dams and making canals the direction of flow of the river can be altered in order to construct a hydropower plant. This can be hazardous in some cases due to potential flooding of low lying areas but in some cases can be beneficial providing water for irrigation and other purposes.
