The French did the following :

a. The French built vast irrigation network, canals and drained lands in the Mekong delta to increase rice cultivation.
b. Infrastructure projects were undertaken for the transportation of goods for trade, movement of military garrison and to establish control over the entire region.
c. Construction of Trans-Indo-China rail network was taken up to connect North and southern part of Vietnam and China.
