Mendel developed three principles of inheritance based on his experiment with pea plant.

1. Law of Dominance – In a cross of parents that are pure for contrasting traits, only one form of the trait will express in the next generation.
2. Law of segregation - The two members of a gene pair segregate or separate from each other at the time of gamete formation.
3. Law of independent assortment – Genes for different traits assort independently from one another at the time of gamete formation.
