Question

what do you mean by, if, a element is loosing or gaining its electronegativity or electropositivity?

what are mettalic and non mettalic characters of elements ?

Solution

The electronegativity means the tendency of an element to attract shared pair of electrons of a bond towards itself. The tendency of an atom to lose electrons is called electropositivity of an atom.

When we go down the group in the periodic table, the atom looses electronegativity and gains electropositivity due to increase in size.

The typical metallic properties are

  • High tensile strength
  • Ductility
  • Malleability
  • High thermal conductivity
  • High electrical conductivity
  • Metallic lustre

The reverse of above properties are typical non metal properties.
