What do you mean by the term parthenogenesis? Explain with an example.

Parthenogenesis is the development of an embryo or new individual from an egg (ovum) without involving the process of fertilisation. It is also defined as reproduction without fertilisation. The female gamete develops into a new individual and male gamete doesn't play any role.

New individual produced can either be haploid or diploid.
Parthenogenesis occurs in many plants, rotifers, honeybees, ants, lizards and birds.
