History of the word ‘Dutch’:
1. It was a name given to the Republic of Dutch from 1581to 1795. It had 7 state provinces under it namely; Holland, Zeeland, Groningen, Friesland, Utrecht, Overijssel and Gelderland.
2. All the 7 states formed a confederation and were autonomous with their own governments.
3. The Dutch Empire became one of the most powerful reign in the 17th century with its central power as Holland.
4.But later on Napoleon Bonaparte merged the Kingdom of Holland into the French Empire. Holland is present day Netherland.
5.In the autumn of 1813, the Netherlands gained their freedom back.
Dutch: Today Dutch is name given to the people representing Netherlands and is the official language of Netherlands. Geographically it borders Belgium and Germany and is, therefore, also the official language of Pennsylvania Dutch (the descendants of German and Swiss immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania in the 17th and 18th centuries).
