A wine press is a device used to extract juice from crushed grapes during wine making. Similarly, an olive press is a device used to extract oil from olives.
The devices of wine and olive press provided Gutenberg with the model for his printing press. These wine and olive presses were based on the idea of screw press which allowed direct pressure to be applied on flat-plane. Gutenberg used this idea to press paper onto the movable letter blocks which were inked. This created the image of these letters on the paper.
