What does alimentary canal end at- rectum or anus?Why so?

Rectum or anus are structures in the body whose function is to pass out waste from our body to the outside environment in the form of stool. Role of intestine is to absorb essential nutrients and convert the waste into stool which has to be passed out of the body and for which rectum or anus is required at end.
