Prashastis were written in praise of the kings and rulers. It praised the king in glowing terms — as a warrior, as a learned, playing the veena and the most knowledgeable person about poems and poets. He would be described as equal to the gods.
It tells about the way kings fought and won battles and glorified the kings who won victories in battle.
Many kingdoms were merged into other kingdoms through wars. Prashasti gives us an idea about different kinds of conquered rulers, whether they were uprooted or surrendered through marriages of their daughters.
Most prashastis also mention the ancestors of the ruler (Genealogies).
