What does 'R' stands for in a general formula?
Dear Student,
The compounds which contain only C and H are called hydrocarbon. One of them is called Alkane which have general formula CnH2n+2. Like, Methane CH4 etc.
Alkyl group R- If one hydrogen is removed from the alkane it becomes alkyl which is represented by 'R'
The R may be
CH3 methyl, C2H5 ethyl, C3H7 propyl and so on. The next member is obtained by adding CH2 to previous member.
