What does 'R' stands for in a general formula?

Dear Student,
The compounds which contain only C and H are called hydrocarbon. One of them is called Alkane which have general formula C_nH_2n+2. Like, Methane CH₄etc.
Alkyl group R- If one hydrogen is removed from the alkane it becomes alkyl which is represented by 'R'
The R may be
CH₃ methyl, C₂H₅ ethyl, C₃H₇ propyl and so on. The next member is obtained by adding CH₂to previous member.
