What happens in the chemical process of hydrolysis?

Hydrolysis is a chemical process in which water is added to the substance by the cleavage of chemical bonds. The addition of water causes both substance and water molecule to split into two parts. One of the part of the parent molecule gains the hydrogen ions(H+). The other part gains the hydroxyl ions(OH-).
