Solution

In an atom, number of protons are equal to number of electrons. So, when an electron is lost or gained or lost by an atom, nothing will be happened to protons.

  • If an electron is lost by an atom, the number of protons becomes more than the number of electrons. So atom becomes a cation with valency 1+.
  • If an electron is gained by an atom, the number of electrons becomes more than the number of protons. So atom becomes an anion with valency 1-.
