Question

What happens to the current (i) if the potential difference across the ends of a conductor (a) doubled (b) halved (c) tripled (d) one -fourth? (ii) if the resistance of the conductor is (a)doubled (b) halved (c) tripled (d)one- fourth?

Solution

According to Ohm's law,

V=IR

Or I=V/R

The current is directly proportional to the potential difference.

Therefore if the potential difference across the ends of a conductor is doubled the current flowing through it also gets doubled.

Similarly,

If the potential difference across the ends of a conductor is halved the current flowing through it also gets halved.

If the potential difference across the ends of a conductor is tripled the current flowing through it also gets tripled.

Again,

The current is inversely proportional to the resistance.

Therefore,if the resistance of the conductor is doubled,the current gets halved.

If the resistance is halved the current gets doubled.

Similarly you can get for others.
