Question

What happens to the gravitational force between two objects when the :

(a) mass of one object is doubled.(b) distance between the objects is tripled.(c) masses of both objects are doubled and the distance between them is tripled

Open in App
Solution

We know,

F = Gm1m2/r2

Where, m1 and m2 are the masses of the objects separated by a distance ‘r’.

When m1 is doubled, m2 is tripled and r remains same

F/ = G(2m1)(3m2)/r2

=> F/ = 6F

The gravitational force between the masses becomes six times of the original value.

Percentage change = (6F - F) * 100
500%
