Question

What happens to the kinetic energy of particles when heat energy equal to latent heat of fusion is supplied to a solid at its M.P ? Explain .

Open in App
Solution

We know that when heat is supplied to any state of matter- wether solid, liquid or gas, the kinetic energy of its particles always increases. Therefore, when heat energy equal to the latent heat of fusion is supplied to a solid at its melting point, the increase in the kinetic energy of the system will be such that it will overcome and weaken the particle-particle attraction force in the solid. Thus will solid will melt and change into liquid.
