Open in App
Solution

Methanol is when treated with Na(sodium) to produce, hydrogen gas and Sodium methoxide.

The reaction may be summarised as:

CH3-OH (methanol) ----> CH3-O-Na+ (Sodium ethoxide) + H2(gas)

This reaction is used as a test for prescence of -OH group. as the evolution of Hydrogen gas is easily detected.
