Question

What happens when zinc granules are treated with NaCl and NaOH. give chemical equation and explain the reaction.

Open in App
Solution

When zinc granules are treated with NaCl, then no chemical change is observed. This is because zinc is less reactive than sodium and so cannot displace the latter from its salt. However, zinc does react with NaOH and forms sodium zincate. Following is the chemical equation for the reaction

Zn + 2H2O + 2NaOH → Na2[Zn(OH)4] + H2↑
