What is a backlash error? In which way is it connected to the rachet?

Backlash error is type of error which occurs in the measurement and is responsible for the deviation of the result from the true value.The travelling screw in the instruments should always be rotated in one direction to avoid error due to the backlash.

A ratchet is a device that allows continuous linear or rotatory motion in only one direction while preventing motion in the opposite direction.In the cases where backlash must be minimised a ratchet is used.
