Question

What Is a substrate? How does it effect the enzymes(carbohydrates, protiens, lipids, nucleic acids)?

Open in App
Solution

A substrate is a molecule upon which an enzyme acts.

The substrate bonds with the enzyme's active site and an Enzyme-substrate complex is formed.
The substrate is then transformed into one or more products, which are released from the active site.
Then this active site is free to accept another substrate molecule.
This can be represented through reaction:
E + S ES E + P
Where E= enzyme, S= substrate, P = product
Substrate's concentration effect the rate of enzyme-catalysed reaction. As substrate concentration increases, enzyme activity increases until it reaches a maximum. At its maximum rate the active sites of all the enzyme molecules are occupied by a substrate molecule. A new molecule of substrate cannot bind to a given enzyme molecule until another substrate molecule already bound to the enzyme is converted to product.
