Question

what is foucault current??

Open in App
Solution

Hi Ramya!

Foucault current is also known as Eddy current. Eddy current is an induced current in a conductor, which opposes the change in flux of the magnetic field generating them. According to Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction, an induced emf is produced in a conductor, when the magnetic flux linked with it changes. This induced emf gives rise to a current. Due to this current, a magnetic field is created. This magnetic field opposes any change of the original magnetic field.

Eddy currents have advantages and disadvantages. Like electric currents, eddy currents also produce heat and electromagnetic forces. The heat generated by eddy currents can be used for induction heating. The electromagnetic forces can be used for magnetic levitation, or for braking of motors.

The main disadvantage of eddy current is the power loss in transformers. To reduce power loss due to eddy currents in transformers, the core is made up of thin laminated metal sheets.
