Solution

Sphincters are the set of circular muscles which can relax and contract around an opening inside the body. The gastroesophageal sphincter is the valve at the top of the stomach that allows food to enter the stomach from the esophagus. When it is closed, the gastroesophageal sphincter maintains a higher pressure than that of the stomach so that food and digestive juices cannot wash back into the esophagus.
