Electric charge is a characteristic property of many subatomic particles. The charges of free-standing particles are integeral multiples of the elementary charge ‘e’ (e=1.602×10⁻¹⁹ coulombs). That is, electric charge is quantized. This is known as the discrete nature of charge.
